Danny Knox, a young, amateur prizefighter always maintained
the faith that he could someday be a champion. For
his widowed mother, Julia, that was nothing more than
misplaced ambition. Widowed at a young age and left
with sparse resources, Mrs. Knox repressed her grief
to focus on economy and regimentation, not on her
child's needs. Danny dealt with his anger in a way
that he hoped would inspire him to greatness and eventually
gain her confidence, but that was to be his greatest
battle. Now when faced with life threatening illness,
he renounces his mother's aid and perceives her interest
to be nothing more than a sense of duty. As a last
resort, Julia appeals to Timothy Gardner, a hospice
nurse who, with a magical bag of "different tools,"
helps Danny to find peace, and more importantly, Julia
to see her errant ways and the treasure she has in
her only son. On his death bed, she confesses her
feelings to him; and the following morning, the radio
announces his death as the passing of a great champion.
